Do Users Really Suffer That Much?

Open Source Based Application Performance Monitoring At SFScon 2015

The yearly South Tyrol Free Software Conference SFScon took place on Friday, 13th of November at the TIS Innovation Park in Bolzano. In this occasion, I held a speech about Application Performance Monitoring (APM) using our monitoring engine Alyvix. In this article I just want to provide a short review for those who did not have the possibility to personally attend.

SFScon 2015 - Juergen Vigna - Alyvix

An Executive Summary:

In the age of the cloud, the optimization of end user experience is getting essential for business success. Recently, we’ve further enhanced Alyvix, our Python based end-to-end monitoring engine, to facilitate the monitoring of business-critical applications like Citrix, SAP, terminal server etc. Thanks to the integration of Anaconda and Robot Framework, Alyvix 2 (licensed under GNU GPL) now provides a set of enhancements as for example the possibility to create test cases without any Python knowledge, better computer vision algorithms and the possibility to create detailed HTML reports. At SFSCon, I tried in the little time I had, to present all these new functionalities of our end-to-end monitoring engine. Just as a short explanation: Alyvix is an engine, which continuously simulates a certain transaction series on any application, such a transaction series we call test case. This means that real user behavior (using a computer application) can be simulated by Alyvix, registering the actions a user does with mouse and/or keyboard and then replay this actions, seeing if the application works on one side and how powerful it works (registering times) in the arc of a day/week.

NetEye Solution Architect at Würth Phoenix
I have over 20 years of experience in the IT branch. After first experiences in the field of software development for public transport companies, I finally decided to join the young and growing team of Würth Phoenix. Initially, I was responsible for the internal Linux/Unix infrastructure and the management of CVS software. Afterwards, my main challenge was to establish the meanwhile well-known IT System Management Solution WÜRTHPHOENIX NetEye. As a Product Manager I started building NetEye from scratch, analyzing existing open source models, extending and finally joining them into one single powerful solution. After that, my job turned into a passion: Constant developments, customer installations and support became a matter of personal. Today I use my knowledge as a NetEye Senior Consultant as well as NetEye Solution Architect at Würth Phoenix.
